Feldsee: an exceedingly pretty ‘see’

We’ve had another bike ride today. It’s so lovely to be out in the fresh air and sunshine, sightseeing under our own steam. Although I’ve enjoyed visiting towns, castles and palaces, hiking and cycling adventures are my real love… when the weather is so perfect anyway!

We set off uphill almost immediately. In fact the first half of the ride was uphill, mostly on forest tracks. At least they weren’t scary tracks today! We passed through meadows and forests, with snow capped peaks in the distance and deep blue sky above. Beautiful!

Little did I know the scenery was going to get even better! Feldsee was off our cycle track, 400 metres along a rough track with lots of bumps and drainage ditches. I think John thought I’d bottle out, but I couldn’t resist seeing what, on the map, looked like a perfect round lake tucked away in a crater or cwm. And I’m so glad we made the effort to see it. Views don’t get any better!

The wooded hills and snow capped mountains were reflected perfectly in Feldsee. We were lucky to have arrived relatively early because we were travelling faster than the hikers and, thankfully, it wasn’t too busy at the lake.

Finally, we dragged ourselves away from Feldsee. Nearby we found a self service kiosk at a mountain hut and sat and had coffee and cake. I don’t think we’ve ever come across such a remote self service place, where you select what you want, add up the cost with a calculator, and pop the money in the cash box yourself!

After this, the track continued winding its way gradually uphill through the forest, and the patches of snow got bigger and bigger. In some places they covered the track and I ended up getting off my bike and walking over the icy patches… carefully!

Finally, it was time to head downhill, back to the valley. The roads were mostly in excellent condition and we flew down them, through yet more meadows with pretty houses dotted here and there.

After stopping to eat our butties by a small lake in a place called Hinterzarten, it wasn’t far to Titisee. The lake side resort was packed, which was a shock to the system after the peaceful forest tracks.

We stopped in Titisee just long enough for a cold beer in the quietest beer garden we could find, then headed back to the campsite on the far side of the lake. We both agreed it had been a great ride.

We’ve now decided to stay in Titisee for an extra night and do a hike tomorrow. This will mean we can’t visit some of the places we’d intended to on our journey back north. However, we both agree we’d rather have another day outdoors in the sunshine, exploring 😊
