Dunkirk

We were woken early by the sound of hot air balloons firing their way into the sky just over the Somme River from the campsite. We had breakfast and packed everything into Molly and hit the road to Dunkirk, 2-3 hours away.

Apart from a busy toll section, the journey went well as we pottered north. We arrived in Dunkirk at lunchtime and were lucky to get the last available motorhome parking bay.

We walked to the marina and found a restaurant for lunch, treating ourselves to a delicious three course meal for the last day of our holiday.

It was lovely sitting at the water’s edge, enjoying the view and the sunshine, and watching the seagulls and hundreds of jellyfish in the water below.

Afterwards, we walked up to the beach. It was packed with people enjoying the hot sunshine. We wandered along a spit and found a quieter area for a paddle, before heading back along the shoreline to a sculpture garden, just behind the motorhome aire.

When we left the aire to explore a bit of Dunkirk, many parking spaces had been taken by cars but, not long after we got back to Molly, a lot of people headed home and the aire got quieter. John moved Molly to a shadier, flatter parking space where we enjoyed a peaceful evening.

We’re now on the ferry, making our way back to the UK. Molly is sunning herself on the sun deck, while we’re inside watching the coast of France disappear into the distance. Back in Dover, we’ll have a 7 hour journey home. I’ll be glad to get there ☺️
