We had a relatively easy day today, finding our bearings on Val di Sole Campsite and in the local area. We started by walking up to Peio Fonti. The path felt almost vertical and I was pretty breathless. I’m putting this down to the altitude, not my lack of cardiovascular fitness!

Peio Fonto is a small spa and ski town at about 1400m above sea level. From here ski lifts go up to 3000m, with spectacular views. We’d like to walk up Monte Vioz, which is 3645m high, but the weather isn’t looking promising for it and the shortest path from the Peio 3000 lift is currently closed.

We had a look around the town before eating lunch in a sandwich bar. Then we bought lift passes and took the Tarlenta gondola up the mountain, to 2000m. From there, we had planned to take the Doss dei Cembri chairlift to 2400m, but it was closed for lunch… only in Italy!

We’d had a late start and also knew storms were forecast so, instead of waiting for the lift or walking further up the mountain, we decided to walk back down to the campsite. The path wound its way through trees, along forest tracks and through pretty alpine meadows. The sun kept appearing intermittently, but we could see dark clouds looming.

When we got to Peio Village, which is separate from Peio Fonte, the heavens opened. We pulled on our ponchos and continued our way down hill. Some goats seemed fascinated by our colourful capes!

Thankfully, the showers stopped as we got back to the campsite and the sun came out. We’ve checked out the campsite shop and bar, had a shower, and made plans for tomorrow.

Once again, storms are forecast for the afternoon so our time is limited. We’re going to take the Peio 3000m lift and hope that the morning is clear enough to see the views from the top lift station. As we can’t attempt Monte Vioz, we’re just going to walk back down the campsite… I hope my knees can take it!
