My legs were killing me after the long downhill walks over the past couple of days so, today I chose to walk uphill and use different muscles, rather than taking a ski lift.

We took the bus to Peio (again saving my poor leggies), then set off up some steep zig zags signposted Malga Covel. On the way up the hill we passed St. Rocco’s Chapel (consecrated in 1500) and a former Austro-Hungarian war cemetery (1915-1942). A pyramid-shaped memorial with an eagle on the top has stood on the hill since 1915. It bears the names of the soldiers buried on the site.

We continued uphill on a track then through green meadows, passing under the gondala we’d previously used, enjoying views of the high mountains. As we got nearer to the highlight of our walk, a slim but tall waterfall called Cascata Covel, we came across a large walking tour moving quite slowly. Hoping to get to the waterfall before them, we sped up and passed them. We were lucky to have the the place to ourselves for 5 minutes before they caught up, as did other walkers coming in the opposite direction.

Continuing on, somehow we also managed to have Lago Covel to ourselves. This pretty lake is nestled on the edge of a green pasture, with a view of the waterfall in the distance.

The pasture is grazed by goats and our next stop was Malga Covel, the farm where the goats’ milk cheese is sold. Unfortunately, it wasn’t open today, but we did meet a few of the goats… very cute!

The walk was just what I needed. Although it was quite cloudy, the day was lovely and warm, and the scenery was beautiful. My legs were happy going uphill, although they did protest quite a lot when they had to go back downhill to Peio.

Finally we arrived back in the village. We debated getting the bus down to the campsite or stopping for lunch. In the end, we noticed the village mini-market was open and, by the time we’d stocked up on supplies we had missed the bus. Therefore, we had to stop for lunch, sampling the local cured meats, cheeses and red wine… yummy.

Today, we’ve barely left Molly Moho. The rain has been heavy and non-stop all day so I’ve taken the opportunity to wash my hair, do some mobility exercises and catch up on emails and messages. We’ve also ended up booking our next trip, which will be snowshoeing in Austria… so exciting! Now for a film before dinner… sometimes being lazy is just what’s needed… my legs will thank me anyway!
