Rhuddlan to Kandersteg: automobile, plane and trains

We had a long day travelling. The taxi picked us up at 7.15 in the morning to take us to the airport. Check in and security went smoothly so we sat and had a coffee and tea, followed by a beer and mojito (well we are on holiday) before boarding the plane to Geneva.

The flight was only an hour and a half, but the queue through passport control seemed to last for ever… thanks Brexit! We finally collected our rucksacks, thankfully both still in one piece… I’d been worried about the straps catching in the conveyor belts and all my carefully packed kit appearing in dribs and drabs on the luggage carousel!

We then bought tickets for the train to Kandersteg and were excited when a double decker train pulled onto the platform. We found some seats on the top deck and settled in for the 2 and a half hour journey to Brig, where we had to change. We enjoyed the scenery as we passed through towns along Lac Leman (Lake Geneva) until, eventually the mountains appeared, firstly green and tree covered, then jagged and snow capped.

The train was on time… as they always seem to be in Switzerland… which was great because we had just 4 minutes at Brig to transfer to the train to Kandersteg. This travelled more steeply uphill, through tunnels in the mountains, until we finally arrived at our destination which, from first impressions, is a very pretty small town, nestled between high mountains, with a river running through the centre.

We found our Airbnb easily which, although rather dated, is just what we need… clean, spacious and comfortable. The balcony is an added bonus! By now it was nearly 19.00 and we were tired from our long day so, rather than showering, changing and going out for a meal, we popped to the shops for supplies… pizza and wine al fresco, enjoying the view. Perfect!
