A road trip to northern Italy: 4 countries in a day

On Tuesday, we set off on a 2-month road trip to Italy. The plan is to meet Dan and Jackie and spend a few weeks exploring the Italian Lakes together, travelling from Garda in the east to Maggiore in the west. Then, we’ll spend time on our own visiting the Italian Rivera, hiking through Cinque Terre and spending time on the Ligurian coast.

The journey to Canterbury, where we spent Tuesday night, was uneventful. However, despite the motorhome aire being quiet, neither of us slept well, waking often through the night. Therefore, when John asked me what time it was at 3.45 in the morning, I suggested getting up and catching an earlier ferry.

After a diversion to Morrisons to fill up Molly’s fuel tank, we soon arrived at Dover, and booked onto the 6 o’clock ferry. This meant we’d arrive in Dunkirk at 9 o’clock (local time) instead of 11 o’clock, giving us more time to relax later in the day.

Because the school holiday’s are ending and we were so early, the ferry was lovely and quiet. I’d booked the premium lounge to see what it was like and we weren’t disappointed. It was very peaceful, with only three other people, although one of them was determined to chat to us while we were trying to eat our breakfast! The breakfast buffet was very tasty and there was lots of choice. We had breakfast rolls, pastries, cereal, yoghurts, fresh orange and coffee, then spring water, muffins, crisps and biscuits made their way into our bag for later. All the food we consumed meant it was good value!

We were tired after our early start, so we decided to stop sooner than we’d originally planned. I found a reasonably priced campsite in Liefrange (in Luxembourg) that looked quiet, and where we’d hopefully be able to relax and sleep well.

The journey through France and Belgium to Luxembourg took about 5 hours with one stop to stretch our legs an and get something to eat. We settled onto our pitch and relaxed for a while before going for a walk through the woods to Lac de la Haute Sûre. This huge lake supplies 70% of Luxembourg’s drinking water and has three stars for water quality (the maximum) so, of course, I had to have a swim! The water was delightful… so warm that I didn’t want to get out!

Luxembourg is beautiful… very green, with trees and rolling hills, lakes and deep river gorges between sandstone cliffs. I’d happily move here (if only that was possible)! Now we’re on the move again, heading to Colmar. It’s been raining on and off all morning. I hope it stops so we can explore the town.
