Lovere: walk to San Giovanni Sanctuary

A couple of days ago, John and I hiked up Monte Cala, which overlooks the village of Lovere and Lake Iseo. From the camping aire, we could see the San Giovanni Sanctuary perched on top of the hill. It’s a church now with a small bar restaurant attached, and has seen better days, although signs along the route show the renovations that have been taking place.

We walked along the prom from the campsite, through quite a large market selling clothes and food, then turned into the town itself. Lovere was once said to be one of the most beautiful towns in Italy, and we have to admit to being slightly disappointed because we’ve seen quite a few places we’ve preferred. Anyway… we soon left the cobbled streets and piazzas behind and headed steeply uphill.

The ancient cobbled path was relentless, with the gradient never easing. I was soon boiling hot and grumpy, so I was grateful for the shade of the trees and walls, and the water fountain we passed.

Eventually we reached the Sanctuary. It was built on the ruins of a medieval fortress, and there are wonderful views over Lake Iseo and Lovere below.

I was pleased to rest and cool down with a beer before we headed back to the town. It wasn’t particularly sunny but was hot and humid. After negotiating more steep, rough paths, I have never needed an ice cream more!
