Charny-sur-Meuse: driving and relaxing, rain and bras

I woke with a slight hangover which, thankfully disappeared after some tea and coffee. Unfortunately, it was raining so we didn’t visit the Vauban fort in Neuf-Brisach… another time. This is the first time we’ve heard rain in almost a month!

The drive was straightforward, as is usual on French toll roads. That said, we were relieved that our Bip and Go tag worked at the tolls… it’s been a while since we tested it! The Garmin Camper sat nav also behaved today. Unfortunately, we can’t say the same for the CarPlay on our phones. I spent much of the journey trying to get one of them to connect so we could play music, but gave up in the end!

After driving for about 4 hours, we stopped in Verdun to refuel and do a quick shop. We then parked up on an aire in the little village of Charny-sur-Meuse on the banks of the River Meuse. It’s a lovely spot with rolling hills all around. On the way here we passed a huge French wartime cemetery in the neighbouring village just across the river. A reminder that this area was the scene of terrible devastation in the First World War.

The sun appeared so we had a little wander to stretch our legs. The village has a small nature reserve with ponds, a fitness trail and the river with an old mill. There were also lots of bras hanging between trees to support breast cancer awareness, which made us smile.

When we returned we met our French neighbours and their two beautiful travelling cats. I will definitely have two little kittens to accompany me one day 🥰!

We’ve both had showers and washed our hair because the aire has water for us to top up Molly’s fresh water tank, and a place for us to empty her waste tank. We’ve tried out the Camping Car Park app for a couple of nights and it’s been good for us, with electricity, water and a peaceful night in a pleasant spot for 12 euros. Now John is cooking tea while I catch up on my blogs. The rain is pitter-pattering outside again, but we’re warm and cosy inside ☺️.
