Snowshoeing in Austria… again!

We enjoyed snowshoeing with the Austrian Alpine Club last winter so, when the opportunity arose, we jumped at the chance to do it again this year.

Having packed all our kit… rucksacks, boots, gaiters, trekking poles, snowshoes, avalanche transceivers, shovels and probes and so on… we set off for Manchester airport.

We had an early morning flight… plus it was John’s birthday… so we decided to stay at Tribe Hotel. We had a lovely Italian meal and an early night. Unfortunately, the room was so hot that we got very little sleep, tossing and turning all night!

At 3.45, we were glad to get up, grab some breakfast and walk to Terminal 2. Check in and security went smoothly, as did our flight to Munich. From the airport, we caught a train to Munich East, where we changed onto a train heading to Venice, which stopped at Steinach am Brenner. We’re staying here in an Airbnb for 4 nights before joining the Austrian Alpine Club trip in Obernberg am Brenner.

When I contacted the Airbnb owner, Petra, to see if we could check in an hour early, she very kindly offered to collect us from the station, saving us a walk up the hill. The apartment is lovely… perfect for us… and we settled in before popping out for a meal. We went to a restaurant we visited last year where they serve delicious giant schnitzel with fries, before having an afternoon nap then watching a film. Hopefully we’ll get more than four hours sleep tonight!
