The evening after the night before

I wasn’t going to write a blog post today. I thought there’d be nothing much to share, or that we’d want to reminisce about. We woke up tired and slightly hungover. It’s been incredibly windy and acorns from the trees above kept clinking on Bertie’s roof. We didn’t feel like doing anything.

As it’s our last day on the campsite, and we’re now planning to use aires and France Passion sites rather than campsites, we’ve done 2 loads of washing… it should dry quickly in the wind, if it doesn’t end up blowing all the way back to Wales.

John’s packed the chairs and table away because we won’t be using them in the strong wind. I’ve washed my hair… taking the opportunity for a long hot shower because I don’t know when we’ll next be on a campsite. Then, when the chores were done, the jigsaw came out and we spent an hour or two putting together the peaks and roads of Snowdonia.

Once 5 o’clock came, we headed to the campsite bar to watch England play Fiji. After all the negativity towards Wales fans from the English this weekend, as an English woman, I’m slightly ashamed to say I shouted for Fiji… not that I was concentrating on the match. I’ve been planning the next week of our trip… Arles, the Camargue, Aigues Mortes. England won anyway.

As it’s quite cheap, between the two matches, we had dinner in the campsite bar… steak for John and salmon for me. Two large tables had been reserved, which we expected would be filled with French people for the second match, France versus South Africa. We were surprised when the larger table next to us was filled with 10 Croatians, travelling with their rugby club.

They warmly invited us into their group, sharing their Zagreb Rugby Lager and banter with us. Along with fellow Welsh supporters, the French, a smattering of English, Germans, Dutch and a couple of South Africans, the bar is buzzing… the atmosphere warm and friendly. When we came to order one last beer and pay the bill, the barman gave us the last round free of charge!

Unfortunately, to the dismay of the majority of people in the bar, France lost. Chatting to the other Wales fans, we noted that all the teams we’ve supported have lost this weekend! Back at Bertie, we got the duvet out for the first time since we stayed at 1000 metres high in the Verdon and had a cup of tea in bed… cosy. Cooler weather isn’t all bad 😊
