Travelling to Ullapool in search of LPG

So… today wasn’t spent as planned, meandering along the north coast following the NC500, stopping to visit places we fancied. The LPG gas ran out yesterday so, to avoid having to rely on campsites for electric hook up for heating and having no cooker, we needed to find some. We assumed that we’d not filled 1 of the 2 refillable LPG bottles and that we’d used all the gas up for the fridge, heating and cooking. We can’t camp off grid without gas and, although we have an electric coffee maker, we can’t make a cup of tea!

The two nearest LPG filling stations were either back near Inverness or Ullapool. After phoning to check there was plenty in stock, we chose to head for Ullapool.

We drove west following the NC500 past sandy beaches lapped by turquoise sea, and through rolling farmland with gambolling newborn lambs. Bright yellow gorse was everywhere, like sunshine, brightening the barren heather moorlands we passed through. Wonderful!

The road was single track and busy, so progress was slow, especially with me wanting to pause to take photos! By about 1 o’clock we decided we might miss the garage closing time if we continued on that route. Therefore, we turned south west and headed for Lairgs and then Ullapool on another single track road with regular passing places. This took us through very remote and wild countryside with few houses and very little traffic. The scenery was stunningly beautiful.

We eventually reached Ullapool and refilled with LPG but the tanks didn’t take as much as expected. Then, when John turned on the hob, there was no gas. After a bit of switch turning and head scratching, he realised that the crash cut-off switch had activated and shut off the supply from the cylinders, which had not actually been empty! It must have been the bumpy roads which made the sensor think we’d had a collision. Well at least it works. We live and learn! Although, we’ve had Molly Moho for about 18 months, for various reasons, we haven’t had chance to test her out properly, especially with long periods off grid.

We parked at the church car park in Ullapool for a donation, then had a short walk up the hills behind the town and along the coast before having a meal out and a few drinks. All’s well and we’re ready to hit the mountains 😃

    1. We are too! It happened again today, but at least we knew what it was this time. The roads are so rough here, but I suppose that’s the price we pay for travelling to remote areas!
