WHR day 4: Arolla to La Sage

There have been tears today because what I thought would be an easy walk turned out to be much more difficult, especially after 2 awful nights’ sleep.

We’d expected a nice balcony path meandering along the hillside. However, much of it ended up being very challenging under foot. They were relentless ups and downs over rocks and tree roots and it was quite slippery in places. The path itself was really pretty though, through woodlands and alpine meadows passing in and out of the sunshine, and crossing numerous waterfalls tumbling down the mountain side.

We sat down under a sign at a path junction for a drink and a rest. John noticed that the sign for the path we had just walked said ‘Chemin difficile’! Difficult path! At least it wasn’t just in my head.

A short while later we arrived at Lac Bleu, which made all the effort worthwhile. The lake really is a stunning blue, with a beautiful waterfalls at the far end. I had hoped for a swim but when I dipped my feet in it was absolutely freezing. I had to settle for a paddle.

After a bite to eat, we set off downhill. We decided against stopping at the restaurant in La Gouille, choosing instead to push on to Les Haudères for lunch. The trail was now much easier, so we made good progress.

After lunch at a crèperie in Les Haudères, we passed through the old part of the town. The Valaisan buildings here are perched on stilts topped with large stone slabs to prevent rodents getting in.

I had more tears on the last couple of kilometres to La Sage. It was so steep, and I was so hot and tired. When we arrived at the hotel, we were greeted with a smile and a room upgrade. I cried again!

The room is lovely, with 4 windows and 2 balconies with mountain views, and best of all, a huge bath. I’ve had a wonderful soak, and John popped out to buy me an ice cream. He’s been so kind to me all day. ☺️ Now all I need is a good night’s sleep, ready to take on 1680 metres of ascent tomorrow. 🤞
