WHR day 7: Zinal to Cabane Bella Tola

Today’s been an excellent day, and very manageable for my little legs. We had a steep climb right at the beginning of the day. After that, we followed an undulating balcony path all the way to Hotel Weisshorn.

It was a lovely path giving us amazing views of the five 4000 metre peaks behind us. This was also part of the route that the famous Sierre-Zinal Trail Race follows.

It was great to be able to see how far we’d come, as the path disappeared behind us. We couldn’t see anybody following us, but lots of runners and walkers came in the opposite direction. At one point, we took a little detour to a wonderful metal bird sculpture, with steps to climb onto its back.

I was pleased when the Weisshorn Hotel came into view after a few hours. We stopped for blueberry tarts, which had been recommended by a local in Zinal, and cold beers, which were most welcome.

After our rest, the walk continued through wooded countryside and beautiful pastures, past several waterfalls. After some downhill, we climbed steadily up to our Cabane for the night. En route, we passed several scupltures of planets on an astronomy trail, and stopped for lunch on a ski lift chair, where someone offered to take our photo.

About 6 and a half hours after leaving Zinal, we had a very warm welcome at Cabane Bella Tola. Our little room is lovely. I particularly like the little porthole window!

We had a hot shower, then sat outside the hut in the sunshine, before having dinner. We shared a table with Dan and Becky, who are hiking the WHR on a similar schedule to us, and are good company, having similar interests to us.

Having recharged our batteries, we’re ready to go again tomorrow. Just 4 more days to go. The trek is flying by!
