Liechtenstein: a hike and a swim

We left Colmar in bright sunshine to make our way to Malbun in Liechtenstein. The journey went well, apart from queuing traffic through Basel and Zurich.

At lunchtime we took a detour to Lake Zurich where we had a lovely warm swim. Then we ate our cheese butties while we dried off. Wonderful!

We didn’t arrive at the aire in Malbun until 3 o’clock so we didn’t have as much time as we’d expected for the hike I’d planned. The weather forecast was for rain and, possibly thunder, so we set off quickly.

We took the lift up the mountainside, then made our way along a ridge climbing to the summit of Augstenberg (2359 metres) knowing we could easily back track if the weather deteriorated. Luckily it stayed dry and we reached the cross on the top and carried on with our planned circular 11 kilometre route.

The views were stunning in all directions, with cloud floating around in the valley below us. At times it engulfed us and we couldn’t see anything! It was a fantastic walk and I’m glad we didn’t change our minds and give it a miss.

Several times, I had to walk past or through herds of cows. John was impressed when I managed to stay calm but, actually they were so docile, they weren’t very scary. I even took portrait photos of some 😆.

Back at Molly, we cooked the pork chops we’d bought on Colmar market and had them with a lovely salad for a late dinner, while the rain fell outside, as predicted. In fact, it rained all night and we awoke with the village shrouded in low cloud. Next stop sunny Italy! 🤞
