16th August: Lautersee and Ferchensee

I was so tired after yesterday’s exertions that I slept until 9 o’clock. The weather was lovely so we decided to go for a walk, rather than moving on to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, our next stopover. However, I insisted that it had to be a relatively easy walk.

We took the chair lift up the mountains on the opposite side of the valley from where we have previously walked to visit a couple of lakes, which the guidebook says it is possible to swim in. The mountains on this side of the valley are lower and much greener, with meadows and pasture, as well as forest. The paths were also much easier to walk than those we encountered yesterday!

For the chair lift we dropped down to the first lake, Lautersee. You can see it in the distance in this picture. It was quite a bright green, and very beautiful.

We decided to have lunch in a bar on the lake. John had half a pig!

After lunch, we moved on, uphill, to the second lake, Ferchensee. This was equally as beautiful and we found a nice spot where we spent a few hours swimming, sunbathing and reading.

At about 4.30 we dropped back down to Lautersee for a beer, before walking back down the mountain to Mittenwald.

All in all, a relaxing day in the sunshine. Tomorrow we move on to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, not too far away, where we have a few more walks planned.
