AV1 day 1: to Rifugio Averau

Poshest refuge ever! We have a family room with an en suite bathroom. It even has a bidet… not that we’ll use that! It has been a long day to get here though, with a few trials.

Today is our first day trekking on Alta Via 1 (AV1), a long distance hiking trail in Italy. Well… we haven’t actually done any of the trail today, and we aren’t doing it all, but we’ve joined the trail and will hike along it for the next 6 days.

We packed up at the campsite, then after a 20 minute drive left Bertie at Renato’s house. He gave us a lift to the bus stop from where we caught a bus north to Cernadoi, the nearest village to AV1. This took about 90 minutes.

We then followed the planned track, then a vague path to reach a more defined waymarked path which led to our rifugio for the night, Averau.

The walk was all uphill but at a steady gradient, first through woodland, then through meadows and, finally, over rocks and scree.

We had some light rain and saw lots of hail on the ground but luckily avoided the worst of the rain and hail which hit soon after our arrival. At least the showers meant it was cool for us as we ascended, which means I’m feeling good. Also, the landscape has been beautiful, despite the less than perfect weather.

The refuge is lovely and we’re spoilt with our room. I thought I was booking 2 beds in a room for 4 but, as it’s a family room, we have it to ourselves. We don’t even need to use our own sleeping bags, towels and toiletries because they’re all provided!

Hopefully, it’ll be sunnier tomorrow, but not too hot… yes, I’m fussy! We have a long day, although more downhill than uphill.
