We left Berdorf today and started to move back north. After paying the bill, emptying the bins, toilet and waste tank and topping up the fresh water, we set off to Beaufort.

Beaufort Castle was built in four phases between 1015 and 1650 and, therefore, has Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance features. Castles in Luxembourg have been relatively cheap to visit so we decided to explore, spending an enjoyable hour wandering through the ruins.

Next we headed to Vianden, having read good reviews of an aire on the edge of the town. It isn’t the cheapest aire we’ve stayed at but we’re on a beautiful pitch overlooking the River Our with electric hook up, and there are nice clean showers and toilets.

We walked into the town along the river to explore. It’s a very pretty place, with a chateau perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the town and river.

I had hoped for a nice peaceful meal at lunchtime but we ended up with a table of noisy British children next to us (with the adults on a separate table) so we just had one course and left, looking forward to not having to travel in school holidays soon!

We decided not to go into the chateau but had a wander around it, then took a chair lift to a viewpoint. I enjoyed this rather more than I expected to… I don’t know why… but it was fun being carried over the river and up the hillside with lovely views over the chateau and town, and brought back memories of skiing holidays many years ago.

After a beer in town, we’ve been relaxing back at Bertie. We’re staying in Vianden for another night and hoping to do a bike ride. The weather forecast isn’t looking promising for that though. Fingers crossed!
I like the views from that chairlift!

It was great. I thought it might be a waste of money, but think it was worthwhile 😊
