The morning started with an unproductive detour through High Wycombe to a petrol station with cheap fuel. Despite me noting it might not be open at 7.45 on a bank holiday Monday, John insisted on driving up and down steep residential streets with speed bumps and, when we finally got to the destination on his Google mapping, there was no petrol station! I had to laugh that we’d wasted 10 minutes using fuel rather than filling up with cheap fuel! 😆

When we finally got to the motorway, it was quiet and we soon reached Birling Gap (having filled up with cheap diesel en route 😜).

After eating breakfast, we walked down to the beach, where there were great views of the Seven Sisters cliffs, the white chalk standing out in the sunlight. I paddled in the warm turquoise sea, and my trousers got soaked by a huge wave when I wasn’t paying attention. Oops!

We then walked uphill onto the South Downs to Belle Tout lighthouse. From here we could see the red and white striped Beachy Head lighthouse, and the beautiful coast stretching in both directions.

We’re now having a pub lunch before our ferry crossing from Newhaven to Dieppe in France. We arrive at about 8 o’clock British time (9 o’clock French time) and we’ll drive for a couple of hours or until we find a nice peaceful aire to stay at. Tomorrow, the plan is to visit Chartres. The adventures have begun 😃.

What a great day you had despite the early detour and then the wet trousers. Bon voyage and enjoy Chartres tomorrow xxx
