Henningsvær: sightseeing, hiking and football

At last we have sunshine! Today we’ve been able to explore Henningsvær and hike up a mountain… more on that later.

Henningsvær is on a string of small islands connected to the mainland by single-lane bridges.

Historically, it was a fishing village but now it’s a primarily a tourist destination with craft shops, galleries and cafes.

The little town also has a famous football field, which looks great in drone shots because it’s in a scenic location and doesn’t have much around it except sea. Unfortunately, it was too windy for Dave to fly today!

We wandered down the narrow streets and round the pretty harbour and buildings, before stopping for coffee and cake. It was lovely to be able to sit outside!

After lunch in Molly, we climbed Festvågtinden, a 541 metre high mountain. It was a relatively short hike but the path was steep, rocky and muddy, and badly eroded.

We don’t mind steep paths but the erosion did make the ascent difficult. As it’s Saturday, it was also very busy today and we kept having to wait for other people to pass on the trail. Many didn’t bother saying ‘thank you’ either, something which John and I find very annoying!

Apparently, the views from the top of the mountain are fantastic. However, we can’t comment on them because the cloud came in and smothered the summit while we were on our way up. Just our luck! It also cleared a bit on our way down!

We didn’t have time to enjoy the views on the way up, always watching where we were treading to avoid slipping and clambering over rocks, but descending was easier. The views over the islands of Henningsvær were lovely once we dropped below the cloud.

There’s a small reservoir about 200 metres from the bottom and, when we reached it, we climbed to a rocky area for a snack and a drink and to enjoy the views.

Now we’re back at Molly, showered and ready to go into town for dinner. The cafe bar where we had coffee earlier is showing the match but advised us to arrive early because they can only allow 80 people in. Hopefully we’ll get places. If not, we’ll just soak up the atmosphere.
