We had rain throughout the night and it was still raining when we woke up. Thankfully, it was forecast to stop early afternoon. We phoned a motorhome stopover that we liked the description of, which was on the coast about an hour away. John phoned to book and was told it was currently full, but to come at about noon and there would probably be space.
We made a move after breakfast, shopping on the way, and arrived at about half eleven. The aire was nearly empty and we were able to pick a waterfront pitch right by the sea. We had a lovely welcome from the owner and bought some smoked trout, which is smoked by his family.
While it was still raining, we spent some time planning the route and places to stay for the rest of the trip. There’s not long left! The forecast was correct and the sun was shining by early afternoon, so we sat out to eat our lunch. The trout was delicious!
We then decided to make use of the free wood stove sauna. A German family had already lit it, so it was up to temperature when we went in. At first it was too hot for us, but after a few times going in and out, cooling off with a dip in the sea, it became more comfortable.
The water was chilly but, unusually, not very salty. On Googling this we found that the water in the Gulf of Bothnia has very low salinity compared with the open ocean due to river run off and little mixing. Marine creatures don’t live here but freshwater fish like pike and perch do. Another fact we discovered is that it is virtually non tidal here. Fascinating! Everyday is a school day. 🤣
We’ve now had a lovely curry for tea and are sitting looking out over the bay. The scooter is out of the garage ready for our trip to the trailhead to do a walk tomorrow.
