Piramidi di Zone: a fascinating walk

We left the campsite at Iseo yesterday, to move to an aire at Lovere, at the opposite end of Lake Iseo.

On the way we stopped for a short hike at the Piramidi di Zone nature reserve. Here, morainic deposits of sand, boulders and pebbles have formed pyramids over the centuries, some of which are 30 meters high. They have large stones sitting on top, acting as protective caps. Fascinating!

We followed a path that took us around the pyramids, giving us views of them from above and also close by. There were explanatory boards along the route, and benches in the shade to rest… very welcome as it was a hot day and the paths were steep… firstly downhill then back uphill to the village where we’d parked. Thankfully, much of the zigzagging route was through woodland.

It was good to get near to the pyramids and erratic boulders and amazing to think that, in millions of years, some of these boulders might become earth pyramids.

After a stop for LPG and diesel, which was thankfully uneventful (previously in Italy we have had issues refilling our LPG) and for supermarket supplies, we travelled the 10 minutes to Lovere. We have lovely grass pitches side by side, just a few minutes from the lake. Today I’m looking forward to visiting the town.
