Yesterday, we decided to have an easy day so we could catch up on our sleep and go shopping. We had planned to go out on the lake with kayaks and Dan’s stand up paddle board but we had some storms in the afternoon and decided we’d just relax and read our books instead.
Today has been much busier. I woke up at 7.30 and decided I needed to go for a run because we have a trail race next Sunday. I’m really not sure how the heat and altitude will affect me. When John woke up, we got ready quickly and set of for a 10.6k run up to Mont Daupin fort.
The path uphill to the fort was in full sunshine so I did end up walking much of the 200m ascent. The fort is amazing with huge ramparts and a mixture of severe looking military buildings and a pretty village inside the walls.
Thankfully, the run back to the campsite was downhill and flat, with much of it in shade.
We showered and had breakfast… A fresh fruit smoothie and Nespresso coffee as we’ve brought the appliances from home! Then we cycled into Guillestre to see the weekly market. There were lots of stalls selling all types of produce, from food to jewellery and crafts to kitchenware. We also visited tourist information to get details of walks, cycle routes and buses, which we’ll need to get to and from our trek. It was also useful to use their decent wifi!
After treating ourselves to lunch in a restaurant on the pretty square in the centre of the village, we cycled back to the campsite using a cycle track that John had found in the leaflets we’d picked up. It was going ok until we reached some steep zigzags downhill, which almost made me cry! I ended up walking that section but cheered up again when we reached the flat track. So much for being an easy blue trail! Time for a rest now.
